How to Create a Company in Tally Prime (Step-by-Step 2026)

Learn how to create a company in Tally Prime step by step — company details, financial year, GST setup, security, and common setup mistakes.

Every single thing you do in Tally Prime — invoicing, GST, payroll, reports — sits inside a “Company.” Setting this up correctly on day one saves you from messy fixes later, especially around the financial year and GST details, which are hard to change once you’ve started entering transactions.

This guide walks through creating a company in Tally Prime from scratch, the fields that actually matter, and the mistakes that cause the most rework down the line.

What You Need Before You Start

Have these on hand before you begin:

  • Tally Prime installed (latest release)
  • Your business’s legal name, address, and state
  • Your financial year start date (1st April for most Indian businesses)
  • Your GSTIN, if you’re GST-registered (you can add this now or later, but doing it now saves a step)
  • A decision on whether this company needs a separate “Group Company” structure (only relevant if you manage multiple linked businesses)

Step 1: Open the Company Creation Screen

  1. Open Tally Prime
  2. From the startup screen, select Create Company (or go to K: Company, then Create Company if you’re already inside Tally Prime)

This opens the Company Creation screen, where everything below gets filled in.

Step 2: Fill in Company Details

  • Name: Enter your business’s full legal name exactly as it should appear on invoices and reports
  • Mailing Name and Address: This prints on your invoices, so use the address you want customers to see
  • State: Select your state — this matters a lot later, since it determines whether your sales are intrastate (CGST+SGST) or interstate (IGST)
  • Country: India (or your relevant country)
  • Pincode: Enter your area pincode

Step 3: Set the Financial Year

  • Financial Year Begins From: For most Indian businesses this is 1st April. Get this right the first time — changing it after you’ve recorded transactions is messy and not recommended
  • Books Beginning From: Usually the same as your financial year start, unless you’re migrating from another system mid-year

Step 4: Set a Base Currency (Optional)

If you deal only in Indian Rupees, you can leave the default currency symbol as INR. If you regularly bill in other currencies, you can configure that here, though it’s usually easier to add multi-currency support later from within the company once it’s created.

Step 5: Save the Company

Press Ctrl+A to save. Tally Prime will create the company and take you straight into the Gateway of Tally for that company.

Step 6: Enable GST (If You’re GST-Registered)

If you didn’t enable GST during creation, do it now before recording any transactions:

  1. Go to Gateway of Tally, then F11 (Features), then F3 (Statutory & Taxation)
  2. Set Enable Goods and Services Tax (GST) to Yes
  3. Enter your GSTIN/UIN, State, and Registration Type (Regular or Composition)
  4. Press Ctrl+A to save

Once this is set up, you’re ready to follow our guide on how to create a GST invoice in Tally Prime to start billing.

Step 7: Set Up Security (Recommended for Multi-User Businesses)

If more than one person will use this company file, set up access control now rather than later:

  1. Go to F11 (Features), then F1 (Accounting Features), or directly to Company Features depending on your version
  2. Enable Use Security Control to Yes
  3. Create user roles and passwords so each person only sees what they need to

See our guide on how to secure company data in Tally Prime for the full walkthrough on permissions and access levels.

Step 8: Take a Backup Before You Start Entering Data

Once your company is set up the way you want it, take an immediate backup so you have a clean starting point to roll back to if anything goes wrong during data entry. See our guide on how to backup and restore data in Tally Prime.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wrong financial year start date — this affects every report you generate going forward, and fixing it after the fact is painful
  • Skipping GST setup at creation — you can add it later, but it’s one less thing to forget if you do it up front
  • Not setting up security before multiple people start using the file — retrofitting user permissions onto a company with months of unrestricted access is harder than starting clean
  • Inconsistent company naming — if you manage multiple businesses in Tally Prime, use clear, distinct names so you don’t accidentally enter data into the wrong company
  • No backup before go-live — always have a clean restore point before real transactions start

FAQs

Can I create more than one company in Tally Prime? Yes. Tally Prime supports multiple companies, and you can switch between them or even view consolidated reports across companies using Group Company features.

Can I change the financial year after creating the company? It’s possible but not recommended once transactions exist. If you need to correct it, do so as early as possible — ideally before recording any vouchers.

Do I need to enable GST immediately when creating a company? No, you can enable it anytime from F11, then F3. But if you know you’re GST-registered, it’s simpler to set it up before you start invoicing.

Can I copy settings from an existing company into a new one? Tally Prime doesn’t directly “clone” a company, but you can export and import masters (ledgers, stock items, etc.) from one company to another to speed up setup.

What’s the difference between “Mailing Name” and “Name”? Name is how Tally Prime identifies the company internally. Mailing Name and Address is what actually prints on your invoices and reports, so make sure it matches what you want customers to see.

Once your company is set up, the natural next steps are enabling GST and creating your first GST invoice — see our guide on how to create a GST invoice in Tally Prime — and locking down access with our guide on how to secure company data in Tally Prime.
