GSTR-1 reports your outward supplies (sales) for the period, and it’s only as accurate as the invoices you’ve recorded all month. Tally Prime can compile this data directly into a GSTR-1-ready report and export format, so you’re not manually re-entering invoice details into the GST portal.
This guide covers preparing, checking, and exporting your GSTR-1 data from Tally Prime.
What You Need Before You Start
- Tally Prime installed, with GST enabled and your sales invoices recorded for the period — see our guide on how to create a GST invoice in Tally Prime if you haven’t set this up
- Any Credit Notes or Debit Notes for the period already recorded — see our guide on how to record debit note and credit note in Tally Prime
- A GST portal login to actually file the return once your data is ready
Step 1: Open the GSTR-1 Report
- Gateway of Tally, then Display More Reports (or directly via Statutory Reports, depending on your release)
- Select GST Reports, then GSTR-1
- Set the period (month or quarter) you want to file for
Tally Prime pulls together all sales invoices, credit notes, and debit notes recorded within that period into the report.
Step 2: Review the Summary and Resolve Exceptions
Before exporting anything, check the exceptions Tally Prime flags:
- Inside the GSTR-1 report, look for sections like Uncertain Transactions or Incomplete/Mismatch in Information
- Common issues shown here include missing GSTIN on a party ledger, missing HSN/SAC codes, or invoices with an incomplete tax breakup
- Drill down into each flagged voucher (usually by pressing Enter on the line) and correct the underlying ledger or voucher
- Refresh the report after corrections to confirm the exception count drops to zero, or as close to zero as possible
Filing with unresolved exceptions is the single biggest cause of mismatches between what you file and what your buyers see in their GSTR-2B, so it’s worth taking the time here.
Step 3: Check B2B, B2C, and Other Category Splits
GSTR-1 separates your sales into categories — B2B (registered buyers), B2C Large, B2C Small, exports, and a few others. Tally Prime classifies these automatically based on the party ledger’s registration type and the invoice value, but it’s worth a quick scan to confirm:
- B2B invoices show the correct buyer GSTIN
- B2C Large invoices (above the threshold for that category) are correctly separated from B2C Small
- Any export invoices are correctly marked, since they’re treated differently for GST purposes
Step 4: Export the GSTR-1 Data
- From the GSTR-1 report screen, use the export option (typically Alt+E, depending on your release)
- Choose the JSON format, which is what the GST portal accepts for direct upload
- Save the file somewhere you’ll remember — you’ll need to upload it on the GST portal in the next step
Step 5: Upload and File on the GST Portal
- Log in to the GST portal and navigate to Returns, then GSTR-1 for the relevant period
- Use the option to upload the JSON file generated from Tally Prime
- The portal processes the file and populates your return with the invoice-level data
- Review the populated return on the portal itself before submitting — this is your last check before filing
- Submit and file using your DSC or EVC as required
Reconciling After Filing
Once filed, it’s worth periodically comparing your GSTR-1 figures against your GSTR-3B and against what your buyers report in their GSTR-2B, since persistent mismatches can trigger notices. Use our guide on how to generate financial reports in Tally Prime alongside the GST reports to keep an eye on this regularly rather than only at year-end.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Filing with unresolved exceptions still showing in the report, which carries errors straight into your filed return
- Forgetting to include Credit Notes and Debit Notes for the period, which understates or overstates your actual liability
- Missing GSTIN or incorrect state codes on party ledgers, which misclassifies B2B sales as B2C or vice versa
- Not reconciling invoice numbering — gaps or duplicates in invoice numbers are flagged by the portal and can cause filing issues
- Treating GSTR-1 filing as a one-person, end-of-month scramble instead of checking exceptions weekly as invoices are recorded
FAQs
Can I file GSTR-1 directly from Tally Prime without using the GST portal? Depending on your Tally Prime release and any connected filing service, direct portal connectivity may be available. Otherwise, the standard method is exporting the JSON from Tally Prime and uploading it on the GST portal yourself.
What if I find an error after I’ve already filed GSTR-1? You generally can’t simply re-edit a filed return. Corrections are typically made in a subsequent period’s return, following current GST rules — check with your tax advisor for the specific correction method.
Does Tally Prime calculate late filing fees or interest automatically? No, Tally Prime prepares your return data based on what you’ve recorded. Late fees and interest, if applicable, are calculated and shown on the GST portal itself.
How often do I need to file GSTR-1 — monthly or quarterly? This depends on your turnover and whether you’re enrolled in the quarterly filing scheme. Check your GST portal dashboard, since eligibility and scheme details can change.
What’s the difference between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B? GSTR-1 reports your detailed outward supplies (sales) invoice by invoice. GSTR-3B is a summary return covering both your sales and purchases, used to actually pay your net GST liability for the period. Both need to reconcile with each other over time.
